The Wire Harness & Cable Assembly Checklist: What Every Buyer Should Verify
Now you need a manufacturer to turn that print into a physical, reliable, tested wire harness or cable assembly. But how do you know you are choosing the right partner? How do you verify that what you think you are buying is what you will actually receive?Â
In over 60 years of serving industries from medical to aerospace, we have learned that the clearest prints can still hide assumptions. The best suppliers can still miss details. The lowest quote can still become the highest cost.Â
This checklist is designed to give you the engineer, the buyer, the project manager a framework for verifying that your wire harness and cable assembly partner is truly qualified. Use it before you issue a purchase order. Use it to compare suppliers. Use it to protect your project.Â

Part I: The Technical Verification Checklist
Before discussing price, verify that the manufacturer can actually build what you have designed.Â
1. Material Specifications: Are They Locked? Â
- Has the manufacturer confirmed that every component (wire, connector, terminal, overmold material) matches your BOM exactly?Â
- Are they using authentic, traceable components from authorized distributors, or could they substitute with “equivalents” without your approval?Â
- Do they have certifications (like UL recognized components) where your design requires them?Â
2. Manufacturing Feasibility: Can They Actually Build It?Â
- Has their engineering team reviewed your print for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) ?Â
- Have they identified any potential issues—like impossible bend radii, inaccessible termination points, or conflicting tolerances—before quoting?Â
- Do they have the specific tooling, applicators, and test equipment required for your connectors?Â
3. Testing Requirements: How Will They Verify It Works?Â
- Does the quote include 100% electrical testing (continuity, hi-pot, insulation resistance)?Â
- If your application requires it, can they perform additional tests (shield integrity, VSWR, capacitance, pull testing)?Â
- Will you receive documented test reports with every shipment?Â
Part II: The Quality Systems Checklist
A manufacturer’s quality infrastructure determines whether your order is built consistently or merely “hopefully.”Â
4. Certifications and StandardsÂ
- Is the facility certified to ISO 9001? (This is the baseline for any serious manufacturer.)Â
- For regulated industries, do they hold specific certifications like ISO 13485 (medical), AS9100 (aerospace), or IATF 16949 (automotive) ?Â
- Do they build to industry workmanship standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 ?Â
5. Traceability: Can They Track a Problem to Its Source?Â
- Can they trace finished assemblies back to the specific material lots (wire reels, connector batches) used?Â
- Do they retain machine parameters (crimp heights, pull test results) for each production run?Â
- How long are records retained after shipment?Â
6. Inspection and Process ControlÂ
- What in-process inspections occur during manufacturing?Â
- Do they use statistical process control (SPC) for critical operations like crimping?Â
- Are inspectors certified to relevant standards (e.g., IPC trainer certification)?Â
Part III: The Commercial and Supply Chain Checklist
Price is important. But total cost of ownership is what matters.Â
7. Quotation Transparency: What Are You Actually Paying For?Â
- Is the quote itemized (tooling/NRE, materials, labor, testing, packaging)?Â
- Are there hidden costs (engineering review fees, setup charges, minimum order premiums)?Â
- What is the validity period of the quoted price?Â
8. Lead Times and CapacityÂ
- What is their standard lead time from order acknowledgment to shipment?Â
- Do they offer expedited or Quick Turn services when you need them?Â
- Do they have the capacity to scale from prototypes to production volumes without requalification?Â
9. Supply Chain ResilienceÂ
- Do they maintain safety stock of long-lead or critical components?Â
- Do they have multiple sourcing options for key materials?Â
- How do they communicate and manage supply chain disruptions (allocations, obsolescence, price changes)?Â
Part IV: The Partnership Potential Checklist
Beyond the transaction, consider the relationship.Â
10. Engineering SupportÂ
- Do they offer design assistance or value engineering suggestions?Â
- Will they work with you during prototyping and iteration?Â
- Are they willing to collaborate on cost reduction or performance improvement over time?Â
11. Communication and ResponsivenessÂ
- How quickly do they respond to quotes and technical questions?Â
- Do you have a dedicated point of contact, or are you passed between departments?Â
- How do they handle changes, discrepancies, or problems when they arise?Â
12. Experience and ReputationÂ
- How long have they been in business? (Auctus: 60+ years)Â
- Do they have experience in your specific industry or application?Â
- Can they provide references or case studies from similar projects?Â
